The Dice House , 19 Jun 2013 - 22 Jun 2013

19 Jun 2013 - 22 Jun 2013 - Theatre at The Old Rep Theatre

The Dice House is a black comedy by Paul Lucas, inspired by Luke Rhinehart’s ‘The Dice Man’ – it explores the nature and limitations of free will.

Dr Ratner, a psychiatrist, uses ‘Dice Therapy’, a process by which patients are encouraged to make all decisions based on the whim of a dice.

Feuding psychiatrist Dr Drabble’s wife has run away from him and is now resident in The Dice House.

In order to ‘rescue’ his wife, Dr Drabble attempts to kidnap his wife from The Dice House, using another psychiatric patient acting as his proxy, which leads to unforseen conquences.

In a dramatic climax, the fate of both doctors is determined by a single roll of the dice.

Birmingham Royal Ballet - Giselle, 19 Jun 2013 - 22 Jun 2013

19 Jun 2013 - 22 Jun 2013 - Dance at Birmingham Hippodrome

In a village deep in the mountains, two young people, Giselle and Loys, are deeply in love. But Loys has not been truthful with his beloved. He is actually Count Albrecht, son of the local lord, and is already betrothed to Bathilde, a lady, and his social equal.

When jealous Hilarion, a rival for Giselle’s hand, proves who Loys really is, and Bathilde arrives to claim her fiancé, the heartbreak is too much to bear. Driven mad by despair, Giselle takes her own life.

After her funeral, a sorrowful Albrecht visits her grave, but it is night and he is in terrible danger. The bitter ghosts of jilted brides rise and condemn him to dance himself to death. Only Giselle’s love, powerful enough to reach from beyond the grave, can save him; she must keep him safe until dawn breaks and he can escape, but dawn is many hours away...

With music by one of the 19th-century’s great ballet composers, Adolphe Adam, Giselle stands alongside Coppélia and Swan Lake as one of the most celebrated classical ballets. David Bintley and Galina Samsova’s stunning production, clad in gorgeous designs by Hayden Griffin, stays true to the classical spirit and steps of the original.

Ruddigore, 19 Jun 2013 - 22 Jun 2013

19 Jun 2013 - 22 Jun 2013 - Theatre at Artrix

This is a great showcase for Sullivan’s musical dexterity, including some of the best music he ever wrote. The sparkling score is full of energy from the riveting to the grippingly ghoulish.

Gilbert’s satire remains sharp and pertinent as it pokes fun at the aristocracy and the relationships between them and their servants and local folk. This ‘upstairs, downstairs’ situation will strike a chord with audiences of all ages.

The high quantity of stand out gags leaves the audience struggling to remember them all.

He regularly plays all the big clubs including The Comedy Store, Komedia, Glee, Rawhide, The Frog and Bucket, Hyena, Baby Blue, The Stand, Comedy Café, Lee Hurst's Backyard, Banana Cabaret and headlines at clubs throughout the UK.

Laughter on the 23rd Floor, 20 Jun 2013 - 29 Jun 2013

20 Jun 2013 - 29 Jun 2013 - Theatre at Sutton Arts Theatre

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Neil Simon provides a peek behind the scenes of TV's golden age in the hit comedy, Laughter on the 23rd Floor.

Based on Simon's own time spent on the writing staff of Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows. Set in 1953 and depicts a harried comedy writing staff frantically scrambling to top each other with gags while vying for the attention of star madman, Max Prince. Max's habit of boozing and popping too many pills is growing under the pressures of rising McCarthyism, network executives, and sponsors who want him to cut back his "too-smart" show and staff so that they can chase after a new audience. A skilful mix of nostalgia, laughter, classic humour, colourful characters and more, Laughter on the 23rd Floor remains an enduring classic from a master of the form.

But then again, why is it that neither Lisa’s cheating husband, nor his current mistress, seem to notice her?!

Intense and anecdotal, David keeps audiences hooked right up to the last punchline as he presents his unique and often warped view of everyday life. This gravel-voiced comic combines supremely controlled delivery with inimitable facial contortions as he cracks some of the best handmade gags in the business.
