Giovanni Gabrieli was the greatest composer of the Venetian high Renaissance. The singers, cornettists and trombonists he had at his disposal were among the best to be found anywhere, and their virtuosity is clearly reflected in the music he composed for them. Ex Cathedra are delighted to welcome back His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts to help them mark the 400th anniversary of Gabrieli’s death with a programme of stunning music from St Mark’s, Venice.

Talent 2012 is a dynamic and innovative project aimed at improving the life chances of young people in the Midlands by developing their skills and creativity. At the same time it provides a vibrant showcase for the arts through the finale competition where winners are crowned in each category.

A glittering array of judges include multi award-winning international hit record producer/ songwriter and method actor Simon Britton, and founder of BBC 1Xtra, Ray Paul. Singers, dancers, rappers, poets, emcees, models, designers & video producers all compete for the title of “TALENT 2012” and prizes including a professional photo shoot, London Fashion Week appearance, a full page spread in Flavour Magazine and more.

Now in its 32nd year, this prestigious competition has a first prize of £3,000 plus recital engagements, and provides young pianists with the chance to further their careers and perform in world-class venues. The competition was founded by Gladys Brant in memory of her parents, and later her brother who was killed in action during the Second World War.

When world-renowned Polar Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes turned his attentions from the great frozen wilderness of the Poles to the world’s highest and most testing mountains he faced several challenges. For a start he was just entering his sixties and recovering from a very severe heart attack, had no climbing experience and, not least, suffered from vertigo! This is the inspirational story about how he conquered those fears.

Interviewed on stage by acclaimed high altitude mountaineer and photographer/cameraman Ian Parnell, Sir Ranulph Fiennes will talk about his expeditions to The Eiger and to Everest. Ian accompanied Sir Ranulph on both mountains, filming for television broadcasts, and will illustrate the evening with footage (some unseen) and stills whilst Sir Ranulph will explain what it takes to finally stand on top of the world, and raise well over a million pounds for Marie Curie.

A sporting institution, Peter Baxter was the organising brain behind BBC Radio’s Test Match Special for 34 years and Henry “My Dear Old Thing” Blofeld, OBE is one of Britain’s most loved broadcasters. He has commentated on the show since 1972.
