One of the world’s great film composers, and affectionately known in India as Pancham Da, R D Burman was among the biggest names in Bollywood music, writing music for hundreds of films spanning five decades. Nearly 20 years after his death, his music still finds its way into soundtracks from Monsoon Wedding to West is West and has been remixed and reworked by musicans from all backgrounds. To this day his innovative music tingles the taste buds of Bollywood lovers and draws in new fans from far and wide.

Premiered in the darkest days of the Second World War, Vaughan Williams’s Fifth Symphony seemed like a vision of peace. And if you enjoy British music at its transcendent best, you’ll love this symphony that begins in a misty sunrise and ends with some of the most serenely beautiful music even Vaughan Williams ever wrote. The superb British soprano Lisa Milne brings all her operatic power to Britten’s show-stopping song-cycle – and under conductor Andrew Manze, Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro opens the concert with an exuberant flourish.

An Appointment with The Waterboys will be an evening dedicated entirely to their music, with no support act. Mike Scott confirms that one half of the show will be ‘a killer set of vintage Waterboys’ to please their most ardent of fans. The other half will concentrate on their new album An Appointment with Mr Yeats which has received rave reviews.

The Waterboys will be appearing in a new seven-piece line up including legendary fiddler Steve Wickham, Irish chanteuse Katie Kim, keyboard ace James Hallawell, lap steel / electric guitar maestro Melvin Duffy, bassman Marc Arciero and drummer Ralph Salmins.

1912: and as Charles Ives imagined what it would sound like if two marching bands collided, the student Prokofiev threw his feisty First Piano Concerto straight in the faces of his outraged professors. Andrew Litton turns up the voltage for this high-octane programme, and then goes even further, with the symphony that threw a stick of dynamite under British music. Walton’s volcanic First Symphony is always a gripping ride – hold on to your hats!

Malkovich’s monologues journey through the life and mind of this notorious Viennese womaniser, writer and murderer, illustrated with music embodying joy, hatred, love, grief, and desire. Sometimes darkly comic, sometimes bleakly brutal, it’s a fascinating insight into the twisted mind of, as Malkovich says, “a bad, bad guy.”

Karl's new work The Peacemakers is about to see light of day. Using text by Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Albert Schweizter, Terry Waite as well as Shelley, the Bible, Quran, Hinduism etc, the work extolls peace. One line, from Rumi [the 13th- century Persian mystic poet] sums up the ethos of the work; “All religions, all singing one song; Peace be with you”.
