The Great Canadian Songbook, 18 May 2012

18 May 2012 - Rock & Pop at Solihull Arts Complex

Keith James presents his own personal interpretations of the music of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen.
An intimate solo concert. Music of such integrity that it flows from the innermost wellspring of human spirit.

It was around 40 years ago that Keith became drawn to these 3 wonderful songwriters, in awe of their contribution to music while unaware at the time that each of them are Canadian.

Their music forms the backdrop to all of the joy, hope and anxiety that we have lived through in recent times. Now somehow locked in time, these are songs that expose such personal and global fragility that they continue to embrace us as if they were our mother’s arms.

Past Lives, 30 May 2012

30 May 2012 - Classical at Solihull Arts Complex

A collaborative film & live music performance.

Capturing moving images is now commonplace with mobile phones and pocket cameras, but before the digital age it wasn't so easy. Small format movie cameras were the liberating technology of the mid-20th Century, giving ordinary people the chance to record everyday events on their 8mm and 16mm cameras.

Cipher have collaborated with visual artist Anthony Hatton to produce a thought-provoking and engaging visual and live musical experience – using footage from the Media Archive of Central England, including local images of the West Midlands and with music composed by renowned musicians Theo Travis (flute, sax, keys - David Sylvian, Steven Wilson, Robert Fripp) and Dave Sturt (fretless bass, loops, soundscapes - Gong, Steve Hillage, Bill Nelson), performed live, alongside musicians from Sinfonia

Together they go on an amazing journey, experiencing sharks and penguins, icebergs and volcanoes. The little snail is amazed by it all, but starts feeling very small in the vastness of the world…

Then disaster strikes – the whale becomes beached in a bay…Can the tiny snail save the day?

Created in Tall Stories’ unique style, The Snail and the Whale combines unique storytelling, live music and lots of laughs.
