Milagres, Anothers Blood , 28 May 2012

28 May 2012 - Rock & Pop at Hare & Hounds

New York was wearing on Kyle Wilson, lead singer & songwriter for the Brooklyn-based quintet Milagres. So he took off, away from the city and his band and his issues… all the way to the coldest, most remote part of British Columbia where he could get some space and breathe. As so often happens in life, he got a little more space than he bargained for – during a rock climbing trip he fell and ended up spending months bedridden with a back injury. Before he left New York, Wilson had thought he might leave the band behind entirely. But during the long days of his recovery he found himself writing songs again, and he realized he wanted to go back.

∆ (Alt-J) , 30 May 2012

30 May 2012 - Rock & Pop at Hare & Hounds

∆ (pronounced Alt-J) came together whilst they were all studying their 2nd year at Leeds University in 2008. A small set was quickly developed and the band’s reputation began to build through some crammed gigs in their front room. A name change followed, the band was previously known as FILMS, and they uprooted and took their unique brand of ‘folk-step’ to Cambridge.

They have had been likened to Wild Beasts, ‘In Rainbows’ era Radiohead, The xx and Anthony & The Johnsons – four acclaimed acts noticeable by their ability to create the kind of patient, sophisticated, intricate music that ∆ do. On the back off the sold-out single ‘Matilda/Fitzpleasure’ their debut album, ‘An Awesome Wave’, is scheduled for release on 28th May, which will further explore ∆’s varied soundscapes and percussive, experimental grooves. Veering wildly from psychedelic avant pop to skeletal folktronica, the finished album promises to trade in understated beauty one minute and epic oddities the next.

It is gorgeous. Backed by great musicians, (such as Steuart Smith (The Eagles) and David Mansfield (who has played with EVERYONE), produced by LWR and Stewart Lerman, the album features ten new terrific original songs and a cover of a classic Paul Simon song, plus a surprising bonus track which features Ira Glass.

Her tales of life as seen from the road are masterfully told, she moves in and out of stories and song, creates a unique tapestry, weaving the ordinary into the magical, and she brings us all along with her. Special guests singers include pals The Indigo Girls and Girlyman, also The Roches and Loudon Wainwright, and Kelly Hogan (from Neko Case’s band)

She had never played her material to anyone until she left home, after completing her A-levels. At eighteen she moved to London; but instead of taking her place at University College London to study Geography, she began experimenting and performing with other musicians. It was at this time when she met Jack Steadman, the frontman of Bombay Bicycle Club. After becoming friends, Steadman asked if she would like to perform vocals on the acoustic album ‘Flaws’. Lucy accepted and performed backing vocals on multiple songs, most notably on the titular track ‘Flaws’. She also appears on Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest album, ‘A Different Kind of Fix’. Steadman has since repaid the favour singing backing vocals on Lucy’s single ‘Scar’.

Junior Murvin had been singing for almost a decade before his smash hit co-written with Lee Scratch Perry. The song became part of the whole dread beat and punk movement in the UK and in his native Jamaica it was to prove the cry of the Jamaican people in the strife torn mid-seventies and early eighties

Dan LaVoie is one of the few musicians in the world actively composing and performing on the rare harp guitar, bringing a unique sound and texture to fans of acoustic music. In 2010, Dan released his highly anticipated second CD entitled "Cause and Effect" featuring duets with Andy Mckee and Michael Manring.

Justin King is a musician and artist from Eugene, Oregon, recognised as a pioneering guitarist for his percussive "tapping" playing style, consisting of a variety of influences ranging from Flamenco to Celtic music. His latest record is a solo effort and features King on a broad range of instruments, including cello, drums, keyboard, bass, and guitar.

Stuart Masters combines Western and Indian Classical, Folk, and Celtic influences to create a unique, hybrid style, with pure, haunting vocals. His self-produced debut album came out in 2010, and 2012 sees the release of his cross-cultural collaboration with renowned Sarode and Rebab player, Rishi Ranjan.
