Critical, 26 May 2012

26 May 2012 - Club at Hare & Hounds

Since his first forays into drum & bass as a burgeoning young DJ, there's no doubt in 2011 that Kasra has made an indelible mark on the scene, a mark that continues to grow ever-stronger as his Critical Music empire prospers.

As Critical's figurehead the demand for Kasra's DJ'ing skills has escalated to the point of a schedule that sees him playing regularly every weekend throughout the UK and rest of the world. Vienna, Budapest, Shanghai, Beijing, Miami, Berlin and of course his beloved London are just a few of the places that have beared witness to the Critical sound and the list just keeps getting longer. Quite a feat these days for someone who's not yet really taken the production bull by the horns.

So he took off, away from the city and his band and his issues… all the way to the coldest, most remote part of British Columbia where he could get some space and breathe. As so often happens in life, he got a little more space than he bargained for – during a rock climbing trip he fell and ended up spending months bedridden with a back injury. Before he left New York, Wilson had thought he might leave the band behind entirely. But during the long days of his recovery he found himself writing songs again, and he realized he wanted to go back.

∆ (Alt-J) , 30 May 2012

30 May 2012 - Rock & Pop at Hare & Hounds

∆ (pronounced Alt-J) came together whilst they were all studying their 2nd year at Leeds University in 2008. A small set was quickly developed and the band’s reputation began to build through some crammed gigs in their front room. A name change followed, the band was previously known as FILMS, and they uprooted and took their unique brand of ‘folk-step’ to Cambridge.

They have had been likened to Wild Beasts, ‘In Rainbows’ era Radiohead, The xx and Anthony & The Johnsons – four acclaimed acts noticeable by their ability to create the kind of patient, sophisticated, intricate music that ∆ do. On the back off the sold-out single ‘Matilda/Fitzpleasure’ their debut album, ‘An Awesome Wave’, is scheduled for release on 28th May, which will further explore ∆’s varied soundscapes and percussive, experimental grooves. Veering wildly from psychedelic avant pop to skeletal folktronica, the finished album promises to trade in understated beauty one minute and epic oddities the next.

8 Jun 2012 - Rock & Pop at Hare & Hounds

The name Yaaba Funk comes from an album called Yaba Funk Roots, the only album ever released outside of Africa by Captain Yaba, a musician from northern Ghana and exponent of the 2-string 'guitar' called the koliko. The band has gigged extensively around London and the UK, building up a loyal fan base with their exuberant live shows and have also performed in Europe and Africa. Their debut album "AFROBEAST" was released in May 2010 by Sterns Records. Remixes by DJD and Richard Olatunde were also released in 2010 by Here and Now Recordings.
