Based on his book, How to rig an election, Professor Nic Cheeseman will present his lecture on How to rig an election without getting caught.

Contrary to what is commonly believed, authoritarian regimes that hold elections are generally able to remain in power longer than those that refuse to allow the populace to vote. This is the most worrying – and important – finding of Professor Nic Cheeseman’s recent publication How to Rig an Election.

Drawing on lessons from elections in countries as diverse as Brazil, India, Nigeria, Russia, and the United States, Professor Cheeseman will discuss the limitations of national elections as a means of promoting democratisation, revealing the six essential strategies that dictators use to undermine the electoral process to guarantee victory.
