25 May 2012 - Jazz at The Drum

In a time of segregation, when jazz and baseball flourished, a courageous group of men struggled to achieve their dreams despite the odds.

This compelling new jazz opera tells the fast-paced story of Negro League baseball players whose talents went unacknowledged whilst their jazz compatriots reached stardom by defining a new art form. Julian Joseph’s swinging score inspired by the era of Ellington and Armstrong offers a lively evening of home runs, peanuts and Cracker Jack, which is great fun for all the family!

Children’s Jazz Opera, programmed with participating primary schools.

Where are the crossovers between the traditional models of “new writing” and the collaborative nature of devised theatre? Is it even useful to preserve a distinction between the different ways of making and sharing work? An expert panel of practitioners and producers share their experiences.

Uncle Sam featured three of the current members, Jak (guitar/vocals), Shane (guitar) and Mick (drums) until Dave joined on bass in 1994.
Uncle Sam's set contained a few original songs plus covers by such classic acts as ZZ Top, Pat Travers and of course Free. All the guys in the band have always had a great passion for the music of Free, so in 1996 when deciding to create a tribute there was only one choice who it would be.

Since then they have gone from strength to strength headlining at Bill Flynn's Free Convention and playing many of the top venues around the country, universally agreed to be the best Free and Bad Company tribute around.

Real life experiences will illuminate areas including: writing as inspiration; writing to order; working with actors and documentary material; writing for and from improvisation; aligning form with content. Finally the limits of devising will be discussed in relation to The Just Price of Flowers, a show that resisted being devised and had to be written.

Perhaps less widely known, 2012 is also London's Olympic year and so, to celebrate both those things, we are embarking on a year long project called Decathlon - ten artworks, each inspired by the decathlon's ten sporting disciplines. It is designed to involve a wide range of people as participants and audience...without them having to don shorts or get out of breath. The High Jump is one of them.

Earlier this year, Talking Birds, in association with Capital Theatre Festival and Writing West Midlands, put out a call for submissions for 5 minute pieces (stories, monologues, plays) which engaged with the high jump, either metaphorically, or literally. The plays or stories needed to be completed - not part-works, or works in progress - but fully realised in, and embracing, the 5 minute form.
