Set in the turbulent backdrop of Elizabethan England Emilia Lanier is a poet, a rebel and a commodity. Often restricted in history to being the ‘dark lady’ muse to one William Shakespeare, Emilia is a vibrant and erudite woman who fights tooth and nail to let her writing have the same standing as her male counterparts. Comedic, heart-breaking and feisty – and with an all-female cast our heroine would be proud of – this play seems to emulate Emilia’s character, and holds a mirror up to our treatment of women throughout the ages.
