Although French cinema may have established a reputation for offering heartthrobs and sirens, their leading actors have developed a remarkable range led perhaps by Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve with over 400 films between them. We shall pay tribute to their achievement, but go on to examine what some of their successors have contributed to an industry that resolutely retains its own identity and distinctive merit.
