Jack the Ripper: Stephen Roberts

In Whitechapel in the East End of London in 1888 a series of shocking killings took place. All the victims were prostitutes and their bodies were mutilated. Letters claiming responsibility were signed ‘Jack the Ripper’. This four-week course will examine what these dreadful events tell us about the lives of the poor in late Victorian London, how the police sought to apprehend the murderer and why they were unable to do so and how the murders were reported by the newspapers.
