“The canal passes through a very industrious area whilst maintaining the calm and tranquillity of being in a rural area. Many factories along the route date back to the pre-war days and were used to build munitions etc for the war effort. The BSA (the site of Ackers Adventure) was the main supplier of guns to the British forces during the Second World War. The Grand Union Canal runs from London to Birmingham and is a total distance of 137 miles with around 76 locks. It is estimated that the canal took 14 years to build with approximately 20,000 navvies during this period. The canal also passes under bridges which again date back to the early 1900's although they have been strengthened to take today's continuous supply of traffic.”
