The Battle of Saltley Gate

The Battle of Saltley Gate combines song, theatre and video to capture the decisive moment in the miners’ strike of 1972, when the mass picket of Saltley Coke Depot by 30,000 Birmingham workers successfully stopped lorries entering the depot, and effectively helped the miners in their historic victory over the Tory government of the time.

Featuring the soaring vocals and dynamic musicianship of Dave Rogers and Fred Wisdom of Banner Theatre, The Battle of Saltley Gate portrays the experiences of those who participated in the epic battle of Saltley Gate, from the striking miners to the engineers and car workers who struck in solidarity with them.

The Battle of Saltley Gate is an upbeat, funny and moving production that looks at this key battle of the past and examines its relevance to the present.
