Clare Rojas: We They, We They FREE

Clare Rojas is best known for her folk-inspired work which challenges the stereotypical representations of the sexes. Depicting the interaction between men and women, nature and landscape serve as a powerful and mysterious stage for a series of events and relations. The exhibition at Ikon comprises much new work, marking a shift in her practice. Devoid of human presence, paintings of typical domestic interiors will be presented, the scenes familiar through recognisable objects and furnishings. The walls of the gallery will be covered floor to ceiling by a patterned patchwork of painted panels, recalling a myriad of reference points from high art and popular culture – US West Coast modernism, Latino folk or Native American craft, naïve outsider art and street graffiti. In addition, Rojas plays acoustic music under the name of Peggy Honeywell, and a performance will take place during the opening night.
