Meet the artist - Dave Allen curator and photographer for Birmingham Photographic Grid project

Dave Allen is Head of Photography at The North Halifax Grammar School. He was educated at Moseley Art School in Birmingham and Cheltenham Art College (Fine Art). Most of his work is focused on the urban environment. Dave says of his Photographic Grids projects: “They are collaborative ventures, which aim to make a meaningful visual statement about an environment by adopting a systematic approach. What does this place look or feel like? The grid imposes a system that sometimes locates the picturesque but is just as likely to find the industrial, rugged, old, boring, threatening or just ugly.”

A decade after the first Birmingham Photographic Grid* was carried out Dave Allen from has organised another one: this time going where Phyllis Nicklin went, In the Footsteps of Phyllis Nicklin. On 16th Januray Dave will give a talk about the project at the Gunmakers Arms.

There will be a selection of the the 2017 Grid Project photographs shown at the Gunmakers Arms from Monday 15th January until Saturday 27th January 2018. This exhibition will be biased towards the photos taken in the Gun Quarter, the Jewellery Quarter and the city centre. There will also be a few of other interesting locations from around the city. However all photographers from the project will be included in the Library of Birmingham exhibition in the summer of 2018. Find out more about the porject here http://www.thegridproject.org.uk/ and follow the project on Twitter via @GridProjectUK
