Nigerian singer Funmi Olawumi, the founder of the Yoruba Women Choir, returns to London with her 12-piece big band featuring the four part harmonies of Naija Soul Sisters and a cracking 8-piece band. Together they mix afrobeat, juju, highlife and fuji to create a big sound that is faaji music. Faaji is a Yoruba word for having a good time and with the rich eloquence of the talking drums driving the music expect explosive rhythms from one the great names of Nigerian music. In her only London club date in 2013 she plays from her new CD "Funmi Ti De" (JNR) described as "An upbeat album that even sound better heard live" by Robin Denselow of The Guardian and "a pretty good album" by Simon Broughton of The Evening Standard.

Birmingham singing competition for Open Mic UK: The singing competition dates for this year’s Open Mic UK singing competition have been announced, and with over 9,000 entrants last year, the 2013 Birmingham singing competition is set to be the biggest yet! The Birmingham singing competition Open Mic UK is brought to you by Future Music who have already discovered such acts as; Birdy, Hatty Keane, Jahmene Douglas and Lucy Spraggan through previous years. The Birmingham singing competition Open Mic UK begins its search for the UK’s best vocalists, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists.

The singing competition Open Mic UK which takes place in Birmingham is one of the largest national music competitions for singers and solo artists in the UK, and the singing competition is coming to Birmingham soon! The Open Mic UK singing competition travels across the country every year in search of the UK's best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists. Acts can perform either covers or original material and will perform live in front of an industry specialist judging panel.

Those who make it through the singing competition’s auditions will go on to perform across the UK in live showcases complete with an audience and judging panel in some of the UKs most prestigious live music venues. By entering for the Open Mic UK singing competition, acts have the chance to progress through the competition to play the Grand Final within the UKs most recognised live music venue, The O2 in London.

The singing competition’s live showcase judging panels are made up of music industry specialists, A&R, vocal coaches and guest celebrities. Gracing the judging panel in previous years has been Radio 1 DJ’s Annie Nightingale and Ras Kwame, Radio Kiss FM’s Charlie Hedges and Mark Hill an Ivor and Novello award winner, who are hopefully set to make another appearance for the 2013 competition!

There are plenty of opportunities for acts that enter the Open Mic UK singing competition to win prizes throughout the competition with over £50,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, including a main prize of £5,000 cash to the overall winner! The winning act will be crowned in front of a packed out crowd within The O2 in London!

The Open Mic UK singing competition is divided into age categories - Under 16, 17-21, and 21 and over, so all ages are welcome to enter. All types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters are invited to enter Open Mic UK. Soulshare & The Yardbird proudly present....

PAQUA - a trans-Atlantic meeting of musical minds. Consisting of Claremont 56 head honcho Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy, Quinn Luke aka Bing Ji Ling, Alex Searle, Patrick Dawes and Patrick Wood the band evolved via friendships old and new and a desire to develop a more organic, focused sound away from their usual musical endeavours.

Paul and Alex had known each other for a long while, Alex having contributed his session skills to many of Paul’s early releases with Akwaaba as well as his solo work, when they realised they’d never actually written anything together despite their mutual musical admiration. Around this time, as luck would have it, Paul was introduced to Quinn as a potential music partner. Quinn, on a sabbatical from the Phenomenal Handclap Band dived in and PAQUA was born…Paul and Quinn and Alex.

With Quinn on vocals and guitar, Alex on guitar and bass and Paul on keys a bit of oomph was needed for the back end. Enter Patrick Dawes, Groove Armada’s percussionist and acclaimed solo artist in his own write. The bedrock of the PAQUA sound was now in place and audio files were soon flying back and forth between London and New York creating the first release. The fruits of these labours were ‘The Visitor’ and ‘Dinosaur Zappa’ released on Paul’s Claremont 56 label. With striking artwork and two tracks representing the yin and yang of the PAQUA sound a Balearic supergroup was unleashed upon the world. CSNY, Cream et al had nothing on this!

Not wishing to become complacent and with an eye on future live performances a new addition was soon brought into the fold; Patrick Wood aka Woody drummer with the Phenomenal Handclap Band and bandmate of Quinn. The new line up was soon hard at it in their respective studios on either side of the pond, and these endeavours, including the track ‘We Are What We Are’, will be unleashed by Claremont 56 in the very near future. A live debut at Croatia’s Garden Festival this summer will see the band reaching new heights and with an album surely to follow the possibilities for this most mouth-watering of collaborations seem endless.

Also as an added treat Bing Ji Ling will be opening things with an acoustic preview of some of his forthcoming solo Tummy Touch releases!!

In a different world they would be playing at funerals in New Orleans, wedding parties in the Balkans or the musical agitators of a runaway circus. However, from their roots in Birmingham, Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Weirdos are a band that blend New Orleans jazz and eastern European melodies with reggae / ska grooves and the fire of punk. Tuba bass lines, cascading fiddle and brass lines and an enigmatic front-man create an exciting and infectious sound that is maybe best described as carnival punk.

Ikon and Celebrating Sanctuary collaborate to present a Sunday afternoon concert by Etran Finatawa, a group of musicians from Niger, West Africa.

Currently touring the UK to launch their new album, The Sahara Sessions, recorded deep in the desert, Etran Finatawa skilfully unite Tuareg and Wodaabe culture in their captivating and hypnotic desert blues. Each poignant song and every slap of the calabash drum articulates the deep-set divisions in the Sahel region that are threatening their Nomad way of life. The band’s first release earned them a BBC World Music Award for Best Newcomers and their second album Desert Crossroads bought them worldwide critical acclaim.
