Shadowball , 24 May 2012

24 May 2012 at The Drum

In a time of segregation, when jazz and baseball flourished, a courageous group of men struggled to achieve their dreams despite the odds.

This compelling new jazz opera tells the fast-paced story of Negro League baseball players whose talents went unacknowledged whilst their jazz compatriots reached stardom by defining a new art form. Julian Joseph’s swinging score inspired by the era of Ellington and Armstrong offers a lively evening of home runs, peanuts and Cracker Jack, which is great fun for all the family!

Children’s Jazz Opera, programmed with participating primary schools.

Headline acts: Julian Joseph, Cleveland Watkiss, The Julian Joseph Quintet, Cast of Local School Children

Gypsy Fire, 24 May 2012

24 May 2012 at Solihull Arts Complex

Expect nothing less than utter virtuosity from this stunning quartet of musicians. Gypsy Fire’s performances combine beautifully melody with fiery, hard edged rhythm and some of the most electrifying arrangements you’ll have heard. Their ability to graft together guitar anthems with classical or jazz greats is unrivalled. Foot tapping, soulful, beautiful -this ensemble will take you on a musical rollacoaster with their unique blend of superbly dynamic music and sheer musicality.

The show crammed full of musical nods to everything from Django Reinhardt, to Lennon & McCartney, Vivaldi and Rodriguez to the Who but all underpinned with a deep sense of Gypsy swing rhythms. The quartet features the acoustic guitars of Stuart Carter-Smith and Ben Travers, plus award-winning jazz violinist Ben Holder and double bassist Paul Jefferies.
