This laid-back Studio show will provide a reminder of why Alan has such a great reputation within the Jazz world as well as showcasing some lesser known jazz names.

He leads his 10-piece band, with its 7-strong front line, playing a wide selection of his favourite music: from his roots in New Orleans style in "Bourbon Street Parade" (still his signature tune) and "Chimes Blues" to the early music of Duke Ellington ("Black & Tan Fantasy" and "Jubilee Stomp")....and Sidney Bechet ( "Petite Fleur") on to the music of Bob Crosby ("Big Noise from Winnetka" and "South Rampart St Parade") and further on to blues by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee ("Cornbread, Peas and Black Molasses") to soul (Joe Zawinul's "Mercy Mercy Mercy") and soulful blues like Miles Davis' "All Blues" .... and probably back to "When the Saints"!

Described by Gilles Peterson as 'the new sound of UK jazz' , The Roller Trio is the latest jazz group to gain prominence through nomination for the Mercury Music Prize at which they made a huge impression winning over all the music critics with their mix of inviting funky tunes and more 'full-on' challenging material. The Mercury nomination was for their debut album on the F-Ire label entitled simply Roller Trio. The trio is from Leeds and show the influence of other Leeds groups, such as Trio VD; the line up is James Mainwaring on saxophone, Luke Wynter on guitar and Luke Reddin-Williams on drums.

Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month The John Morris Trio bring the heaviest jam session to The Yardbird stage.

The Nurvrax Jam is hosted by The John Morris Trio who lay down the jazz grooves for the first part of the evening, taking in such styles as jazz, funk, soul, latin and fusion.

For the second part of the evening the stage opens up for an open jam session, where anyone with an instrument is welcome to get into the groove.

Doors: 8pm til late. Free entry.

Saxophonist and composer Issie Barratt, leader of the National Youth Collective education project, brings a large ensemble that mixes jazz and Indian music.

The line up features Rowland Sutherland on flute, Mick Foster on clarinet, Issie Barratt on baritone saxophone, Gaurav Mazumdar on sitar, Dominic Ashworth on guitar, Prathap Ramachandra on clay pot and Kousic Sen on tabla.

This African jazz quartet comes to Symphony Hall Cafe Bar as part of its collaboration with Celebrating Sanctuary.

The name means My Africa and its music celebrates the rhythms and melodies of the continent, featuring players from The Congo and Angola. They sing in five different languages, including Kikongo, Swahili, Lingala, French and Portuguese.

The Lyric Ensemble and Lyric Trio were formed by Michael Garrick (MBE) to feature his settings of poetry including Shakespeare, Blake, Browning, and some of his own.

Sadly Michael died in 2011, but his music lives on. The band now features Tony Woods on saxophone, Nikki Iles on piano, vocals from Nette Robinson, with Matt Ridley on bass and Chris Nicholls on drums.

Dan Messore is a young jazz guitarist who graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music in 2006 and has quickly established himself as a player with a distinctive voice.

His music is based in jazz, but also draws on other genres, notably folk. Dan’s debut album Indigo Kid was released last year to great acclaim.

Actor, comedian, writer and musician Hugh Laurie visits Symphony Hall marking the release of his second album Didn’t it Rain.

Best known for his title role in House and one half of the comedy duo Fry and Laurie, Hugh is now pursuing his love of blues music.

Following the release of his first album Let Them Talk which celebrated New Orleans Blues, Hugh was inspired by the early pioneers of blues music including W.C. Handy and Jelly Roll Morton and in his second album he delves deeper into the American heartland.

He is joined by members of the Copper Bottom Band including David Piltch on bass, Vincent Henry on horns and Elizabeth Lea on trombone. This stellar line up is completed with Herman Matthews on drums, Mark Goldenberg on guitars and vocals from Jean McClain and Gaby Moreno.

The Printmakers is a new ensemble headed by ECM recording artist and pioneering innovator of the voice in jazz Norma Winstone, and featuring some of the most in demand players on the British jazz scene. Highly respected pianist and composer Nikki Iles and guitarist Mike Walker’s almost telepathic empathy and energy will be familiar to many. Completing the line up are saxophonist Mark Lockheart, who came to prominence in the mid 1980s with the influential and radical big band Loose Tubes and now plays with Seb Rochford’s Polar Bear; bass player Steve Watts, a significant member of innovative groups led by the likes of Django Bates, Iain Ballamy and Kirk Lightsey; and drummer James Maddren , one of the most in demand, young players around today, working with the likes of Gwilym Simcock and Kit Downes..

Roy Forbes is known to Birmingham festival audiences as a dynamic and exciting singer who has built a great reputation in the city over some years as well as appearing (and recording at) London’s Jazz Cafe and the Stables, Wavendon, and taking in other festivals as distant as Milan and St. Lucia, plus high-profile events nearer home such as Brecon, Cork and Soho.

Roy began his jazz career with Andy Hamilton and now has appeared with such notables as Larry Coryell, David Murray, Al Casey, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Jean Toussaint, Dudu Pukwana and many others.

Originally formed in 1982 from Kent based musicians, but now, consisting of musicians who travel from around the South of England and East Anglia. The Gambit Jazzmen have a reputation for good, hot, New Orleans music, and enjoy playing a large repertoire from the 1920s, 30s and 40s intended for dancing or listening. Just like the early Ken Colyer, Kid Ory and George Lewis bands, we consider ourselves a powerful combination creating an exciting atmosphere on stage.
