Birds of a Feather	, 14 May 2012 - 19 May 2012

14 May 2012 - 19 May 2012 - Theatre at New Alexandra Theatre

The girls are back! One of BBC TV’s most popular and fondly-remembered sitcoms comes to the stage with all three of its original leading cast members, PAULINE QUIRKE, LINDA ROBSON and LESLEY JOSEPH.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER ran on BBC for nearly ten years throughout the 1990s becoming a massive hit right from the word go and remains not only a classic comedy but also, as a female-centred long-running series, a truly rare gem.

And now the three stars of the TV series are re-united on stage to re-create their adored characters, sisters Sharon Theodopolopoudos and Tracy Stubbs and their sex-mad neighbour, Dorien Green, in a brand-new show created especially for the theatre by The Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the highly-successful tour of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies.

A shared love of epic, distorted guitars, blistering harmonius pop, art rock and electronica led to the band spending the best part of two years holed up in a disused office space in deepest North County Dublin, writing, rehearsing and at times venturing out to play as special guests for Franz Ferdinand, Passion Pit, The Maccabees, and Local Natives amongst others.

Their collaborative work on Martyn’s albums such as ‘Vegas’ and ‘Deep Blue’ and their sold out poetry and music album ‘Because We Can…’ sees their audience regard them as ‘essential for the heart and soul.’ Of the two, one is melodically tall and sings, the other is poetically shorter and doesn’t….much.

There was a time, back in the early 2000s, when things looked very different.

There was a five-piece band called Passenger and the big money label behind it and there was a critically acclaimed debut album, Wicked Man’s Rest, but when the members of that band chose to go their own separate ways in 2007, Rosenberg opted to stick with the Passenger moniker and trust in his music, his voice and his guitar to take him where it would. He took to the streets and discovered not only that the experience enormous fun, but it also proved empowering for the likeable musical troubadour.

Heroes, 18 May 2012

18 May 2012 - Theatre at Palace Theatre

A comedy by Gérald Sibleyras

Directed by Murrray Andrews

Translated by Tom Stoppard

They survived the war but can they survive the care home?

This poignant comedy which won the 2006 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in a production that starred Richard Griffith, John Hurt and Ken Stott, is now revived by theatre veterans of comedy: DUCKbrothers, whose collective stage experiences span more than 150 years.

It is 1959. Three French veterans of WW1 Gustav, Philippe and Henri live in a home for old soldiers and pass their time grumbling about the staff, dreaming about young women and arguing over whether a statue of a dog is alive. They decide to escape and run away to Indo China or at least as far as the poplar trees on the hill. Hampered only by how they are going to move the 200lb statue of the dog that one of them wishes to bring with them, they plan their escape with military precision.

To be able to do all this without using bad language is remarkable in this cynical age. In his hugely popular One Man Show, Jonathan has established a reputation for just this over the last 26 years– singing to millions across the UK and the rest of the World.

His ability as a musical chameleon - singing songs of great diversity to an incredibly high standard – engages everyone. His anecdotal story telling has people rocking with laughter at the strangest things. When was the last time you saw one man make Grandparents and Grandchildren roar with laughter together?

His easy, natural conversational style of sharing his faith journey combined with superb music and riotous anecdotes is enthralling, engaging and inspiring. He draws you in and before long you feel as if he is singing and talking just for you.

The Great Canadian Songbook, 18 May 2012

18 May 2012 - Rock & Pop at Solihull Arts Complex

Keith James presents his own personal interpretations of the music of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen.
An intimate solo concert. Music of such integrity that it flows from the innermost wellspring of human spirit.

It was around 40 years ago that Keith became drawn to these 3 wonderful songwriters, in awe of their contribution to music while unaware at the time that each of them are Canadian.

Their music forms the backdrop to all of the joy, hope and anxiety that we have lived through in recent times. Now somehow locked in time, these are songs that expose such personal and global fragility that they continue to embrace us as if they were our mother’s arms.

The Arcadian Kicks are without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Birmingham in the last few years and we are delighted to be welcoming them to play live at Freestyle for the first time. Having worked and recorded with Mike Chapman, producer of Blondie’s classic “Parallel Lines” album, The Arcadian Kicks’ sound takes inspiration from far and wide, citing influences from Fleetwood Mac, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine through to The Horrors and The Naked & Famous.

This promises to be a rare occasion in which to catch the band play in such an intimate environment, don’t miss your chance before they hit the stratosphere!
