In Real Life by Cybertwee FREE

In Real Life (IRL), an exhibition by cybertwee.

BOM presents In Real Life (IRL), an exhibition by international arts collective cybertwee.

In our increasingly-connected world, the internet, smartphones and social media have distorted the lines between fantasy and reality. Many of us curate ideal versions of our lives and moodboard world experiences that may otherwise be inaccessible to us. cybertwee’s work explores how we can create an In Real Life version of that kind of space, one that feels both safe and excitingly alien.

For their exhibition at BOM, cybertwee have created a soft, rainbow coloured environment that challenges the traditional images of sci fi found in video games, movies and online. By immersing yourself into this fictional world, audiences are invited to contemplate a sci-fi future that is romantic, cute and feminine.

With 6 ‘trinkets’, cybertwee explore what kinds of animal or electronic chimera (mythical creatures) might accompany us in a future in which the cyborg infiltrates every aspect of companionship. With DIY electronics, the artists have created these trinkets to represent a setting, character or motif that could exist in a cybertwee fiction.

The exhibition continues with a VR experience of the ‘cybertwee HQ’, where you can browse the digital artworks of other female and non-binary artists. BOM’s Mezzanine Gallery meanwhile offers drop-in activities for you to leave your own mark on the exhibition. Create your own Fanzine page (a mini self-made magazine) in response to themes explored within In Real Life and the academic paper The Cyborg Manifesto, written in 1985 by feminist writer Donna Haraway.
