1629 was a great vintage for Venetian music. Famously, it was the year in which Heinrich Schütz travelled to Venice to learn of the latest developments in modern Italian composition. “Hot off the press” that year he would have encountered sacred vocal monodies by Monteverdi and Grandi, ground-breaking and virtuosic instrumental pieces by Castello and Marini, and a rich variety of music by numerous lesser-known musicians – a selection of which is newly edited for this performance – which provides a fascinating and vibrant context for the emerging baroque style in the early 17th Century.
