Fantastique!

We welcome back Lionel Friend, our Conductor Emeritus to conduct this exciting programme. The major work will be Berlioz’s iconoclastic Symphonie Fantastique . It is hard to credit that this extraordinary work, with its ‘fantastical’ programmatic character and innovative orchestration was first heard (in 1830) only six years after the première of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

In the first half of the concert we will hear Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with Heather Roach, studying towards her Advance Postgraduate Diploma, as soloist. Wagner’s dramatic, but rarely performed Faust Overture will open the programme.
