A big smelly rubbish island! And that’s where we find our heroes, Knick Knack and Doo Dad, living on a huge pile of all the things that we’ve thrown away over the year. They might be shipwrecked and forgotten, but they love to invent things and turn all our scrap into brilliant new geegaws – telephones into showers, umbrellas into kites and shoes back into telephones – to help them solve all the problems of living on an island of rubbish. But how can they celebrate Christmas with no shops and no money?

Visitors will be mesmerised by the absolute balance and harmony achieved by these beautiful White Lipizzaner stallions and their regal riders. All of their famous in-hand work and movements above the ground such as the Capriole, Levade and Courbette will be performed.

Solihull Christmas Lights Switch On and Parade, 17 Nov 2012

17 Nov 2012 - Community at Mell Square

FREE (suitable for under 18s)

Solihull town centre will be positively fizzing with Festive spirit this Christmas as the whole town comes together to create a winter wonderland complete with snow, live reindeer and penguins, the tantalising smells of roast chestnuts and mulled wine and, of course, Father Christmas himself.

The countdown to Christmas kicks off on Saturday 17th November, when the Christmas Lights switch-on returns, by popular demand.

At 1pm Father Christmas will be flying in straight from the North Pole to Touchwood’s Manor Walk entrance on Saturday 17 November to officially open his free grotto and he is inviting local children to join him in kicking-off the festivities between 1-4pm.

Children will be able to hop on board Father Christmas’s sleigh to meet the man himself, his real-life reindeers and penguins. Guests will also be treated to some delicious festive delights from Touchwood’s top restaurants and listening to the beautiful sounds of the centre’s Christmas choir.

From 3.45pm, crowds are set to gather in Mell Square for an afternoon packed full of fun, games, freebies, music and entertainment, hosted by Ed and Rachel from the Heart FM breakfast show. There will also be special guests: Alex Winters – the hugely-popular CBeebies presenter – Postman Pat and his cat Jess and a special Harry Potter show, complete with Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape.

At 4.45pm there will be a spectacular parade along the High Street towards Mell Square, led by Father Christmas and his reindeer, along with Shirley Pipe Band and more than 20 well known children’s characters and stilt walkers handing out sweets and treats.

With Father Christmas in attendance, the lights switch on can get underway at 5pm. There’s even going to be snow (no matter what the weather forecast!) so visitors can expect the lights switch on to be a truly magical moment.

Just a week later, on Saturday November 24th, the Solihull Christmas Fayre returns with a fantastic launch for the whole family in Mell Square. Expect to find stalls bursting with seasonal treats, handmade Christmas gifts and lots of delicious food to sample, including the ever-popular bratwurst, chocolate, crêpes and roast chestnuts, as well as an outdoor bar. The Fayre will be open every day until Sunday 23rd December.

What else is happening?

Across December there are special events happening across the town centre. Visitors will be treated to the sounds of local choirs, regular farmers and specialty food markets, exclusive customer shopping events and entertainment in John Lewis and a service and celebration for the Menorah switch on - making a visit to Solihull a real Christmas treat throughout the run up to Christmas.

And not forgetting the traditional Panto (oh, no we wouldn’t!). Dick Whittington runs from Friday 14 December to Monday 14th January at the Arts Complex with all the traditional fun and downright silliness for the whole family.

Late night shopping and free parking

Across late November and throughout December many of the shops will remain open late into the evening. Touchwood has extended opening hours during December until 8pm on weekdays, 9pm on Thursdays and 7pm on Saturdays, with John Lewis staying open until 9pm on weeknights and 10pm on Thursdays 13th and 20th December. Stores across Mell Square, Poplar Road, Station Road and the High Street will also be opening late. Check individual stores for details.

For visitors planning a Christmas night shopping or partying in Solihull, parking will be free for cars arriving after 6pm in Touchwood, John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Church Hill, Mell Square and Lode Lane car parks, from Monday to Friday, from Thursday 29th November until Monday 24th December.

The Poets’ Place is an opportunity to meet like-minded people, give and solicit feedback on your poetry, or just sit back and write for a couple of hours without interruption. You can use the Poets’ Place to make new friends, discover new poets, share and have your work critiqued, make useful connections, set a writing schedule...

Whether you are a published poet, a slam champion, or someone who is just wondering whether poetry might be worth a try, stop by. There is no need to sign up or book a place: just show up with your poems or a blank notebook. There will be someone there to make you feel welcome and advise you on how to make the most of your time there. The Poets' Place can be whatever you as a poet decide to make of it.

Soulful and raw, she blew up seemingly out of nowhere and delivered one of the most critically-acclaimed debut albums of the last few years, the Mercury Music Prize-winning Speech Therapy.

Two years on, having ridden a rollercoaster through life since, shes back, and shes delivered a follow up that packs a powerful punch. If we see her first album as a confessional diary of trials and tribulations, then new album Freedom of Speech is outward-looking, high energy, powerful and engaged.

After 3 ferocious, minutes of ‘Dog Eat Dog’ the phenomenon immediately began and they would dominate the charts for the following few years with extraordinary success. But this was no ‘overnight success’, Adam Ant had been working hard behind the warpaint and feathers for his moment.

It had been the culmination of years of toil; the journey had started at Hornsey College of Art, where Adam had teamed up with some college friends to form the band Bazooka Joe. With Adam on bass guitar, they played the pubs and colleges around London and it was on a cold November night, in 1975, that Adam saw a group that was to change his life forever.

The Crookes have always subscribed to a truly indie ideal of being in a band, and their 8th full length tour saw their gig count for the year pushed to over 200 shows. The entire second album was written on tour in Europe in their van during a heat wave listening exclusively to Motown and Stiff Records, giving the songs unmistakable sound of summer and youth.

Although the backdrop for these songs may have changed from Northern England to the Continent, they still retain the unmistakable poetry and Romance which The Crookes have become known for. It is an album of intelligent pop music.

Only After Dark, 17 Nov 2012

17 Nov 2012 - Club at The End

ONLY AFTER DARK - You are advised to get tickets in advance for this event. This is due to the Duran Duran Convention in Birmingham finishing at midnight and the organisers asked if the attendees could use OAD as an 'after show' party.

With that in mind, from midnight to 4am, OAD will feature 'A Night At The Rum Runner' and will more specifically focus on the tracks played at the Rum Runner at the time Duran Duran were based there... and, even better, the legendary DJ from the Rum Runner - DJ Dick- will be playing a guest set during it.
