ARTS ALL OVER THE PLACE is an annual service user led exhibition and festival celebrating the creativity of people who have experience of mental health problems. It gives individuals an opportunity to present their work alongside promoting the importance the arts play in supporting mental wellbeing, as well as tackling the stigma surrounding mental health. The event brings together artists, service users, voluntary organisations, community groups, medical and social care professionals and the general public, and it also provides free activities and workshops.

EXHIBITING

The team behind the event are once again seeking to showcase work from individuals, groups or artists who have experience of mental health problems and wish to get their work seen in an exciting and professional space. We are using an open call process to uncover the amazing and diverse talent that is out there and want to hear from people with an interest in drawing, painting, sculpture (3D work) photography, poetry and literature.

Those interested in sharing their creative talents should submit their work (2D framed and ready to hang) on Thursday 27th or Friday 28th September, 11.00am – 5.00pm at The Lakeside Gallery, Custard Factory, Gibb Street, Birmingham, B9 4AA. It is our intention to exhibit at least one piece of work from each exhibitor.

Please attach a label to the back of your work stating your name, the title of the work and the medium used.

EXPERIENCE THE EVENT

As well as encountering amazing art by those with experience of mental health problems, there will be a Festival Opening Celebration on Monday 1st October featuring live bands, dance acts, poetry, comedy and a free buffet. Workshops will be running throughout the festival and there will be a Closing Event on Saturday 13th October featuring music, comedy and buffet - we would love to see you at both events and at the festival.

JOINING THE FREE WORKSHOPS

We will be holding two, free, creative workshops each day. They are open to everyone and will run from 11.00am – 1.00pm and from 2.00pm – 4.00pm.

Come along to the event and have a go at a variety of different workshops. These will include art, craft, poetry, music, and drama. We will be releasing the programme of workshops shortly, so please make sure you are on the Arts All Over The Place mailing list.

FRED presents Shakespeare’s most controversial, yet one of his most human, plays in a stripped down and boldly imaginative promenade experience.

From within the tumult of Venice’s markets emerges a young man who needs credit to pursue his love. Antonio offers help, but in turn needs to raise credit from a moneylender. A deal is struck with a fatal forfeit if Antonio’s investments fail.

Love is won, but cargo lost. The moneylender comes to collect his pound of flesh, and with it revenge for years of abuse.

Performed against the stark interiors of @A.E.Harris in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, FRED’s production focuses on the play’s language and conflicts. It asks, is there hope for a better future?

In 1974 the world was to witness a new musical phenomenon the like of which had not been seen since the days of Elvis and The Beatles. The music of the Bay City Rollers became the soundtrack for a generation of teenagers growing up in the mid 70’s. The face and voice of that soundtrack belonged to Les McKeown.

With Les leading the way, the band’s singles and albums shot to the number one spot all over the globe. Massive hits such as ‘Bye Bye Baby’, ‘Shang A Lang’, ‘Summer Love Sensation’ and ‘Give A Little Love’ (to name just a few) propelled the band to world-wide superstardom and their trademark Scottish tartan was to be seen everywhere across the planet.

The Bay City Rollers Story is a celebration of those hectic days of Hit songs, Touring, TV Shows and the behind the scenes pandemonium that followed the band everywhere they went. Renewed Les McKeown has come through the extreme highs and lows of life’s great road and he is here to tell us all about it. If like us you prefer murder, mystery and intrigue you are going to love SCURC Dramatic Society's production of the Axedowne Mystery by Michael Marsh.

This 1920's plot revolves around the proceeds of a diamond robbery that happened three years previously. Information received suggests that the missing jewels may have been hidden at Axedowne and various interested parties descend upon the quiet English country estate to try their luck. The action comes thick and fast with an armed robbery, a blackmailer, a dead body, a bogus police officer, a secret passage, another dead body plus a couple of people who might not be who they say they are. The lady of the house, her daughter, her outspoken sister-in-law, and the doddering butler all join in the hunt to find killer and the missing loot. See if you can work out whodunnit and why?

In this African ‘Waiting For Godot’ The Lady (a retiring prostitute) and The Woman (a fiery domestic worker) meet in a queue, developing an unlikely friendship despite coming from different walks of life. The Lady has brought her chair, the Woman has brought her lunch and thus they pass their time in mutual dependency, played with great hilarity by two of South Africa’s most celebrated comediennes Lesego Motsepe and Hlengiwe Lushaba.
