Jake Mattison started playing music at the age of 10 when he found a guitar in an abandoned cupboard and began to pick out tunes – the only recorded music he had access to was a tape that had Abba’s ‘Forever Gold’ on one side and Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ on the flip. As a teenager Jake became obsessed with boxing, just as his granddad, dad and uncle had all done. He worked hard and turned pro, winning 38 of his 43 flights, but by the time he was in his early 20s he had already begun to lose interest.
