Born into a theatrical family David Edgar took up performing at the age of 5, in his back garden, and went on to make his name in the 70s agit-prop theatre. Since then he has written more than 60 plays and has been involved in theatrical productions both in the UK and overseas for over thirty years. His production credits are quite extraordinary.
He has had a long term relationship with the RSC and at Birmingham Rep. His significant success in 1980 was The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby for the R.S.C.. David is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Hailed as a ‘very English intellectual’ he retains his political vision and has written dramas about American elections, Vietnam War, politics of the Eastern Bloc, issues of adopting British Citizenship, to name but a few.
His latest play, Written on the Heart tells the story behind the King James Bible which celebrates its 400th anniversary this year.
