Crossroads Blues Club, 26 Nov 2009

26 Nov 2009 - Jazz at Tower of Song

With John Denton and open mic

John Denton returns with his band - imaginatively called the 'JD Band'! The band features one of Britain's finest blues harp players Dave Smith, Colin Warren on bass, Alan Davies on guitar and Maurice Winsor on drums. Maurice plays regularly with Robyn Hitchcock and both he and Alan were original members of Hitchcock's 'The Soft Boys'.

Some of you may be familiar with John's work in the late '90's with
Birmingham's '7:17 Blues', which also featured Dave Smith. The band will play their preferred mix of blues, r & b and funk with a little hint of jazz and John will, from time to time, turn his soulful larynx to the odd acappella number! The thrill has gone? Not likely!!!

Multicultural...ism, Schism & Racism, 26 Nov 2009

26 Nov 2009 - Spoken Word at The Drum

Is multiculturalism a good thing or a bad thing? Immigration has transformed Britain, making it a more vibrant, cosmopolitan nation. But have multicultural policies also left it more divided? How should we deal with questions of free speech and religious freedom in a multiculturalism society? And has multiculturalism helped or hindered the struggle for equality? Writer, lecturer and broadcaster Kenan Malik and author of The End of Tolerance, Arun Kundnani debate the vexed question of multiculturalism, racism and equality.

A Christmas Twist , 26 Nov 2009

26 Nov 2009 - Theatre at Trefoil House

Stage 27 presents The Illegitimate Players' 'A Christmas Twist' - a witty, humorous Dickensian satire of Christmas excesses and all too familiar faces…. Join us for an evening of comedy genius as we introduce you to a mixture of characters from Charles Dickens' literary world, all bizarrely intertwined to kick off the Christmas season in the most unlikely way.....

Meet Scrooge, Tiny Twist (a gargantuan twenty-ish boy who is a mixture of Tiny Tim and Oliver Twist), the legendary Mr. Fagin and his booty grabbing imps, Bumble, the Cratchits, Little Orphan Annie, Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future - all garishly dressed to show old Scrooge the error of his miserly ways. Join Tiny Twist as he navigates his way through a 'gruelling' journey to discovering who he is, mingling with a host of characters who don't seem to know what play they are in. A mixture of the stories of Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, these infamous characters are thrown together in a big bowl of literary Christmas punch to create a fresh new gruelling take on the goodness of the poor, and of course the rich, and what Christmas really means……

This performance, directed by Kay Chamroo is part of a fundraiser that the Group is staging in three community venues across Birmingham over three different nights in order to raise awareness and funds for the Group and future performances. Refreshments will be available to purchase during the interval and performances are suitable for families. The cast is made up of variety of Stage 27 members of various ages and experience, and a lot of fun has been had whilst rehearsing!

Performances will start at 7.30pm, and tickets are priced at £5 each or £15 for a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children). For advance tickets, please contact Stage 27’s Box Office on 0781 676 1873, leaving a name, contact details and ticket request.
