Playing original arrangements of world folk music (from Irish to Ladino to American Old-time Country), as well performing their own songs and tunes, armed with an arsenal of musical weaponry.
“The homegrown answer to the Be Good Tanyas!” Birmingham101 Magazine
Atlantic Crossing:
Melisa Devost, Corbin Murdoch, Sarah MacDougall These three young artists represent the finest in Canadian songwriting. Unabashedly personal in their writing and fierce in their convictions, they create achingly beautiful lyrics that speak of life in the stunning, harsh, often contradictory landscape of the North.
Rich Chappell
Styled around American Alt-folk, playing with any stringed instruments he can get his hands on!
“A lovely little affair, mostly centring around singer-songwriters but with other stuff too. (Some quite surprising other things at times.) I liked the vibe, and indeed the value - four quid gets you four musical acts and a chit that lets you get a shot of absinthe for a pound. You can’t say fairer than that.” (russl.wordpress.com)
Since October 2003 we have provided a quality platform for artists and bands working in the fields of Alt-Folk, Post-Folk, Americana, Anti-Folk, and left-field acoustic.
We occasionally have bills that include electronica bands that write and sing songs.
We pride ourselves on being able to offer slots to out-of-town acts for whom there is no other suitable night to play in Birmingham. Misterlee, Monkey Swallows The Universe, and Sgt BuzFuz are but a few who have benefited from this booking policy, that is based around quality and 'fit' rather than the ability to bring an audience.
Through careful programming we aim to provide a decent sized audience of the right demographic for all acts.
Through the billing of each night we aim to encourage inter-regional networking and gig-swops between bands and artists from different areas.
Bohemian Jukebox runs every two weeks, (on a Tuesday) at the Bull's Head, in the leafy suburb of Moseley, Birmingham, England.
